Counterweight is an integral part of elevator traction system. Its function is to reduce the power of traction motor and torque on traction wheel and worm gear.

There is no fixed structure of counterweight, but in any form, four guide shoes shall be set at four corners of counterweight to ensure that counterweight runs vertically along counterweight guide rail during elevator operation.

The counterweight device is located in the shaft and is connected with the car through the traction wheel through the traction rope. During the operation of the elevator, the counterweight device slides on the counterweight guide rail through the counterweight guide shoe to play a balancing role. Counterweight assembly consists of counterweight frame and counterweight iron block. Generally, the counterweight device of 1:1 sling method is adopted for passenger elevator. [1]

Overview of counterweight

The structure of counterweight has a fixed form, but no matter what form, four guide shoes should be set on the four corners of the counterweight to ensure that the elevator runs vertically along the counterweight guide rail.

As shown in the figure on the right, it is a form of counterweight.

Since the counterweight iron is put into the counterweight frame, it should be easy to handle. The configuration quantity of counterweight rail shall be such that the total weight of counterweight iron and counterweight frame is equal to the total weight of lift car plus (0.4-0.5) rated load. The quality of the cable is negligible.

The buffer head on the corresponding buffer position at the lower part of counterweight frame should be detachable.

When the new traction steel wire rope extends to a certain extent after using for a period of time, a section can be taken down, and then another section can be taken down when it is extended to a certain extent. In this way, it can avoid the elevator stopping to cut off the extended steel wire rope and avoid unnecessary trouble to the user and maintenance personnel.

In the design of counterweight frame, the following two points should be paid attention to:

(1) The height of counterweight frame shall not exceed the height of car frame.

(2) The counterweight frame should not only ensure that the required quantity of counterweight iron can be installed, but also ensure that when the elevator lifting height is very high, the quality of the compensation chain or compensation rope and its tensioning device can not be ignored on the strength of the heavy frame.
